happy new year!! hope you lot have had a good Christmas and all of that stuff. for this post, i'm gonna talk about some of the cool gifts I got for Christmas in 2022, for any of you who are interested in that.

A selection of gifts I got placed on a crochet blanket. From the left; there's a Clokowe Video Projector in the box, two HP iPAQ Pocket PCs (the h5550 and hx2490b respectively), a HP Photosmart Mobile Camera that uses the SDIO interface, GoPro Hero 10 Black, Sony HDR-TG3E, a comic book called Sensory: Life on the Spectrum, along with Sonic Mania Plus and Splatoon 3 for the Nintendo Switch.

Two Pocket PCs

I got these two HP iPAQ Pocket PCs from my sister and her boyfriend, who found both of them from an eBay seller who had a bunch of these. They are the iPAQ h5550 (from 2003) and the hx2490b (from around 2005 or 2006). i remember wanting one of these iPAQs when i was younger back in the day, so i was excited to try these out!

the newer hx2490b iPAQ also came bundled with the infamous Photosmart SD card camera, that works using the SDIO interface. I had already heard about this through both LGR and The Science Elf's videos about it, so I was also excited to try that out for myself too. even though the quality may not be the best, it's definitely a fun camera to use regardless!

So yeah, I'm definitely going to be tinkering with these more and see what they can do. unlike the Palms I talked about in a previous blog entry, both of these (even the older 2003 model) have built-in Wi-Fi radios alongside Bluetooth!! I got around to trying this out yesterday, using my old 2009 MacBook to connect them to (via Internet Sharing in OS X), since they both only support the older 802.11b standard.

Pocket HD recording from 2008

another thing I got was this older Sony HD camcorder, the HDR-TG3 (known as the HDR-TG1 in other regions) from around 2008. I've wanted to try this particular camera for years, after first hearing about it from Techmoan's older videos. these days, camcorders aren't really that common in the consumer market, being mostly taken over by the use of smartphones. Even though smartphones can record much higher quality video compared to them in most cases, nothing beats using a dedicated camcorder (or even still camera) like this in my opinion. it can encourage you more to take video/photos, as that's what they are designed for. there's an excellent video from a couple of years ago about a particular Sony Bloggie (a short-lived pocket camera line that smartphones also made obsolete) by Green Ham Gaming, who explains that concept in more detail than I probably could here.

Sensory: Life on the Spectrum Comic

I also want to give a mention to this really great comic anthology that Bex Ollerton put together called 'Sensory: Life on the Spectrum'. To quote from the book's description:

"...a comics anthology featuring comics from autistic creators about their experiences of living in a world that doesn't always understand or accept them."

Being autistic/neurodivergent myself, I really loved reading through these comics and definitely can relate to them a lot. these were originally posted on Twitter and other places during Autism Acceptance Month in 2021, so to have these comics in physical book form is really awesome!!! definitely would recommend this if you haven't checked it out already.

New GoPro

In the photo, the camera is turned on and displaying the live preview on the front LCD, along with record time, battery percentage and video resolution (which was at 4K 50fps in the Linear FOV in this case). The live preview shows me as I was taking this photo from a slightly low angle, smiling towards the GoPro camera.

Finally, going back on the topic of cameras, I got a new GoPro Hero 10 Black!! for a bit of context, I had been previously using a Hero 5 for over 5 years until it stopped working back in August 2022. It happened at probably the worst time as well, during a holiday to Jamaica with my family. my theory on what caused it is that the waterproof doors covering the ports and battery were probably worn out. Thinking about it, I should have gotten replacements for those beforehand, as I think some sand/salt water particles probably got into the hinges and wherever else from using it in sea water many times.

Had it not broke, I would have been perfectly fine with the Hero 5 for a while longer; but regardless, the Hero 10 is definitely quite an improvement over it for sure. I didn't go for current Hero 11 model because, other than maybe the aspect ratio flexibility with the 8:7 sensor, there wasn't much difference I found in the features it offered compared to the 10. and of course, it's a bit cheaper as well. So yeah, I'm perfectly happy with the 10!!

Other things

A couple of other things I wanted to mention but didn't have much to write about include two Switch games; Sonic Mania Plus and Splatoon 3. From what I've tried, Splatoon is definitely a fun game (even though I'm terrible at it lmao) and Sonic Mania was something I've been meaning to try out for ages but never got around to getting it. It's definitely very cool, so I'll be playing it more at some point. And finally, a projector!! It's one of those small, generic budget models which doesn't have the best image quality but, for what it is, it's pretty alright.
